Considering Cannabis?

A Friendly Guide from Sweet Grass Dispensary

Considering Cannabis

Thinking about trying cannabis for the first time? You’re not alone. Every day, Sweet Grass Dispensary welcomes curious newcomers—people just like you—looking to explore cannabis safely, comfortably, and with confidence. Whether you’re looking for relief, relaxation, or simply wondering what all the buzz is about, our team is here to help guide your first steps.

THC vs. CBD: What’s the Difference?

One of the first things to understand is the difference between THC and CBD—the two most well-known cannabis compounds.

  • THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive compound that gives you that “high” feeling. It’s typically used for recreational purposes but also offers benefits like pain relief, appetite stimulation, and improved sleep.
  • CBD (Cannabidiol) is non-psychoactive, meaning it won’t make you feel high. It’s often used for anxiety, inflammation, and general wellness, making it popular for medical use.

Knowing what you want out of your cannabis experience will help our Budmasters guide you toward the right balance of THC and CBD.

Strain Options: Indica, Sativa, and Hybrid

Not all cannabis is created equal—and not all effects feel the same. Cannabis strains generally fall into three categories:

  • Indica: Known for relaxing, sedative effects. Great for winding down at night or relieving pain and anxiety.
  • Sativa: Offers uplifting, energizing effects—ideal for daytime use or creative focus.
  • Hybrid: A mix of both, offering a balanced experience depending on the strain’s lineage.

But as Budmaster Matt Soper explains, “It’s all about individual response. What works for one person might not work for another.”

For example, someone may prefer indicas to help ease anxiety—whereas sativas can make someone feel overstimulated. It all comes down to your body chemistry and tolerance.

How to Consume Cannabis

From flower and vapes to edibles and tinctures, there’s no shortage of ways to consume cannabis. But for beginners, Sweet Grass Dispensary Budmasters strongly advise starting with smoking or vaping instead of edibles.

“Edibles can be tricky,” Budmaster Matt Soper explains. “They take 30–45 minutes to kick in, and a lot of people get impatient and take too much. That’s when bad experiences happen. Smoking, on the other hand, provides near-instant effects and allows better control.”

If you do want to try edibles, start low and go slow. A 5–10mg dose is a good starting point. Take half, wait the full duration (up to two hours), and only take more if you feel comfortable.

Fun fact: Chocolate edibles tend to hit faster than gummies thanks to the way your body metabolizes them.

What About Microdosing?

If you're curious about cannabis but want to ease in gently, microdosing might be the perfect approach. Microdosing involves taking very small amounts of THC—typically 1 to 2.5mg—to feel subtle, functional effects without getting high. “It’s ideal for people who want to reduce anxiety, improve focus, or just take the edge off without feeling impaired,” says Budmaster Matt Soper.

Many beginners start by cutting a 5mg gummy in half, waiting 30 to 45 minutes, and then deciding whether to take more. It’s a simple, low-risk way to explore how cannabis interacts with your body—on your own terms.

What Should I Buy for My First Time?

Go-to starter recommendations:

  • Smokers: A single pre-roll or an eighth of flower. Just a puff or two is all you need to get a feel.
  • Non-smokers: Try a low-dose edible (5–10mg) and follow the advice above.

If you’re nervous, try your first experience with friends. “It’s like having a drink socially—it’s more fun with others and gives you a sense of comfort,” says Matt.

Is Cannabis Addictive?

It’s a common question—and a fair one. The truth? Cannabis is not physically addictive the way alcohol or opioids are. At most, some people may experience psychological dependence, but with mindfulness and moderation, it’s manageable. As Matt puts it, “There’s no wrong way to enjoy cannabis—just your way.”
